"Self-care and confidence is the key to success in any journey you take."
Vanessa Ong is an actor, role model, humanitarian and, quite simply, a very inspiring person.
She is about to compete for the Miss World Australia 2018 title and we took the opportunity to ask her some questions about the lead-up to the competition and see what advice she had for aspiring women out there today.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
From a young age I have always enjoyed performing, having trained in gymnastics and dance. I recently discovered a love for beauty pageants, progressing through to the 2017 and 2018 National Final to compete for the Miss World Australia title.
In 2017, I started acting classes to improve my stage presence and confidence, but I found another hidden love for acting. Since then I have booked several commercials, a web series and a lead role on TV Series Counter Play.
Behind the scenes, I’m in my final year of studying Interior Architecture, and I really love designing for sustainable living. I generally direct my project designs towards creative spaces, exhibitions and museums, combined with sustainable education.
Do you associate yourself more as an actor or a model?
As much as I love the glamour that surrounds modelling, I wouldn’t really call myself a model as I haven’t explored that pathway. I associate more with TV and Film acting and being an inspiring role model for other women through Miss World Australia.
What has the lead up to Miss World 2018 been like?
It has been a very enjoyable and rewarding journey. I really enjoy the fundraising component of the competition, raising funds for Variety, the Children’s Charity, to make a difference in the lives of sick and disadvantaged children.
Preparation involves being up to date on current events, staying fit and healthy while being true to yourself through the entire journey. Self-care and confidence is the key to success in any journey you take.
Any advice for women looking to pursue this career path?
Follow the career path inspires you and believe in yourself. Life is full of pleasant surprises, so if you want to explore a new-found passion or chase a lifelong dream, absolutely go for it.
